On September 19th 2020, SCOME CIMSA UI held its 3rd intervention of community development. “Breaking the Silence” (BTS) was the name of the community development. Breaking the Silence is an Indonesian Sign Language training for medical students of Universitas Indonesia collaborating with Pusat Bahasa Isyarat Indonesia (PUSBISINDO). The event was held online via Zoom Meeting as our platform due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The materials taught on the 3rd intervention of Breaking the Silence were about Indonesian Sign Language for family and human interactions. All participants were divided into three classes (breakout rooms) and each class has its own trainer from PUSBISINDO. The training sessions were held interactively between the trainers and the participants. The trainers for the 3rd intervention of Breaking the Silence were Mr. Agus Subroto, Mr. Iwan Satriyawan Setyohadi, and Ms. Isro’ Permata Sari.

All participants of the 3rd intervention of Breaking the Silence were very eager to learn and very enthusiastic as well throughout the training. The mean between participants’ pre-test and post-test grades increased drastically from 34.4 (pre-test) to 85 (post-test). Besides that, most of the participants (46%) got the perfect grade (one hundred) in their post-test. This occasion showed us that most of the participants had their knowledge leveled up and they understood all the materials taught despite being held online.

The satisfaction questionnaires were given to all participants in order to evaluate the 3rd intervention and to make a better 4th intervention of Breaking the Silence. The results from these questionnaires showed that the 3rd intervention of Breaking the Silence was successfully done because most of the participants were satisfied with the training. The mean grade for “the training was held on time” is 3.63/4, the mean grade for “each agenda had enough time allocation” is 3.73/4, the mean grade for “the facilitations provided were enough to support the events” is 3.79/4, the mean grade for “the method of the training was very good” is 3.92/4, and the mean grade for “the committee’s performance on the training was very good” was 3.88/4. All these grades told us that the 3rd intervention of Breaking the Silence was done very well.

However, there are still more evaluations from the participants that we look up to for the next interventions. Some participants suggested that the trainers and the committees should have had prepared and coordinated well before the events began, to remind all participants a few days before the events began, and to learn directly with trainers in each breakout room without the help of an Indonesian Sign Language translator. Hopefully, the good things from the 3rd intervention of Breaking the Silence could be maintained for the next intervention, and some parts that weren’t so good could be evaluated.
